ive seen many bakers use wooden spoons! wooden dowels, (watch foodnetwork tv show challenge) you will see them use wooden dowels too!

you must not have looked that hard because wood is used all the time especially in wedding cakes. fyi a few fine dining places who I have worked with who use wood in cake decorating the Park Hyatt Bellevue hotel, Brown Betty Dessert Boutique, Tiffany's Bakery, Denise's Delicacies, just to name a few. I don't know where you are from but it is highly common. and it's all about skill if you know what you are doing there are no splinters.

Bakers use wooden dowels all the time to stabilize cakes. You can go to stores and buy wooden dowels specifically for cakes.
